WPML is cheaper than us. Here is what you get for the difference

These are two different kinds of product

WPML and Polylang are translation management plugins. They give your WordPress install the structure for multiple languages: a separate post per language, URL routing, a switcher, and an editor to put the translations in. The translating itself is your job, whether you type it, hire someone, or buy AI credits.

We are runtime translation. There is no second copy of each post. The widget reads the page as it is served and swaps the text, so when you edit a paragraph the translation follows automatically instead of waiting for someone to go and update six duplicates.

That difference is the whole decision. It is not about which plugin has more checkboxes.

The 39 euro tier is the one that catches people

WPML's entry plan looks like the obvious starting point and then turns out to exclude most of what people buy WPML for. On Multilingual Blog there is no AI translation, no String Translation for theme and plugin text, no Translation Management, no page builder support, no menu translation and no WooCommerce support. If you have an Elementor site or a shop, the real entry price is 99 euro rather than 39.

Credit where it is due on renewals: WPML's FAQ says that if you do not renew, the plugin keeps working and your translations keep showing. You lose updates and support, not your site. That is a fairer arrangement than a lot of the market.

Questions people ask

What is the best WPML alternative?

It depends on what is bothering you. If it is the price, Polylang's free plugin does the same job as WPML's 39 euro tier and costs nothing. If it is the workflow, meaning the duplicate posts and the re-translation every time you edit a page, then a runtime tool like WeLocale removes that entirely, but it costs more per year than WPML does.

Is WPML or Polylang cheaper?

Polylang, comfortably. Polylang has a genuinely capable free version on wordpress.org, and Polylang Pro is 99 euro a year with a 50 percent renewal discount. WPML starts at 39 euro a year, but that tier has no AI translation, no WooCommerce support, no page builder support and no string translation, so most people end up on Multilingual CMS at 99 euro.

Is WeLocale cheaper than WPML?

No. WPML Multilingual CMS is 99 euro a year and our Starter plan is $15 a month, so we cost roughly twice as much over a year. We are not the cheap option here and we would rather say so. What you get for the difference is that nothing is duplicated and nothing has to be re-translated by hand when you edit a page.

Does WPML stop working if I do not renew?

No. WPML's own FAQ says the plugin keeps working and translations keep showing, but you stop receiving updates, which they describe as putting your site at risk over time. So the yearly fee is effectively for updates and support rather than for access.

Can Polylang translate automatically?

Polylang Pro can, through a DeepL integration, but you supply your own DeepL API key and pay DeepL separately, it works inside the post editor rather than across the whole site, and their pricing page notes it is currently not compatible with Elementor. The free version has no machine translation at all.

Do I have to rebuild my site to switch?

No. You paste one script tag or install our plugin, then run a scan. You do not create a second copy of each post, and you can leave WPML or Polylang installed while you compare the two.

The other names on your list

Most people comparing WPML are also looking at Weglot which works the same way we do but prices ten languages at a tier costing 299 euros. The other common name is GTranslate which serves your translated site from its own network and, like WPML, gives each language its own indexable URL.
